In Youth of Winchester we delegate various roles to
each other at the meetings, and taking on responsibility is entirely
optional and we are perfectly happy for people to come to the meetings
and events and just contribute their ideas…
But
as a youth council there are various things that we try to ensure get
done such as writing minutes, following up problems and writing letters
to people who we think can do something…
Lots
of members who are not neccasarily officers volunteer for specific jobs
once in a while, as many are easy to achieve. Others are more
challenging, but also rewarding because they take us closer to our
gole. The month to month running of the youth council tends to fall to
the officers:
The Chair is probably the most
important role in the youth council, because they run the meeting and
are the first port of contact for agencies and young people alike. We
don’t just exist in order to try and solve the problems for young people (although that is a fine use for us). It is hoped that as a
youth council we provide a representative view of young people for
places like the Winchester City Council to come and ask our opinions on
plans for the future that will effect us. This has happened in the past
and will again, and it is good to be actively shaping the future.
The
PR Officer is responsible for publicity- this website, any leaflets and
the general appearance of the youth council. This involves any press
releases and also in part organising events such as our movie morning
and the quiz night!
The treasurer looks after
the accounts of the youth council, especially in a financial climate in
which it will inevitably be difficult to get more funding. This
involves directing the money to where it will be most effective and
helpful for the young people in Winchester. We always need ideas of how
to spend money (smallish amounts), although regrettably will not
be able to help or do everything.
The
Secretary and Vice-Chair have become one! This person looks after the minutes, important emails and letters and acts
as an aide to the chair and the other officers. There is not much to
say but the secretary is very important to the running of the youth
council! As vice-chair, they will be in charge of the meeting if the Chair is absent. They will also have lots of responsibility within the youth council itself.
